Disease Information

 Disease OntologyMeSH
Disease ID:DOID:2377D009103
Disease Name:multiple sclerosisMultiple Sclerosis
Category:Disease OntologyMeSH
Type:Nervous System Diseases
Define:A demyelinating disease that involves damage to the fatty myelin sheaths around the axons of the brain and spinal cord resulting in demyelination and scarring. An autoimmune disorder mainly affecting young adults and characterized by destruction of myelin in the central nervous system. Pathologic findings include multiple sharply demarcated areas of demyelination throughout the white matter of the central nervous system. Clinical manifestations include visual loss, extra-ocular movement disorders, paresthesias, loss of sensation, weakness, dysarthria, spasticity, ataxia, and bladder dysfunction. The usual pattern is one of recurrent attacks followed by partial recovery (see MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, RELAPSING-REMITTING), but acute fulminating and chronic progressive forms (see MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, CHRONIC PROGRESSIVE) also occur. (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p903)

[1] PubMed ID:30566690
Disease Name:Multiple Sclerosis
Sample:
Dysfunction Pattern:Expression[highly expressed]
Validated Method:qRT-PCR//RNA-seq//Microarray
Description:We confirmed MALAT1 upregulation in two independent MS cohorts (1.5-fold increase; P < 0.01; 59 cases, 50 controls).
Causality:No

Clinical-realted Application:

[2] PubMed ID:30822187
Disease Name:Multiple Sclerosis
Sample:blood
Dysfunction Pattern:Mutation[rs619586 and rs3200401 ]
Validated Method:Genotyping
Description:The G allele of the rs619586 was significantly under-represented in MS patients compared with controls (OR (95% CI) = 0.65 (0.46-0.92), adjusted P value = 0.03). This SNP was associated with lower MS risk in dominant model (OR (95% CI) = 0.63 (0.43-0.91), adjusted P value = 0.03). The rs3200401 was not associated with MS risk in any inheritance model. Moreover, the A T haplotype (rs619586 and rs3200401, respectively) within MALAT1 was associated with MS risk. The current study provides additional evidences for contribution of MALAT1 in the pathogenesis of MS.
